De-ionized water is also commonly known as demineralized water or deionized water which sometimes abbreviated to DI water or plain DIW.
De-ionized water can also be spelled deionised or de-ionised water
It is water that has had its mineral ions removed, such as cat-ions from sodium, calcium, iron, copper and an-ions such as chloride and bromide.
Deionization is a physical process which uses ion exchange resins which bind to and filter out the mineral salts from water. 
These are also used in some types of water softening filters.
However as the majority of water impurities are dissolved salts so de-ionization produces a very high purity water that is often used in place of distilled water (eg topping up batteries) 
The manufacturing process is rapid, more eco-friendly than distillation and can be run as a continious process.
